This exciting annual event is free for eligible PhDs and Postdocs in physical science and engineering at UC Berkeley, Caltech, Stanford, and UCLA. Reach out to your campus representative for more information about attending.


The 2018 retreat theme is Pathways to a Diverse Professoriate: Leveraging Our Success. It will feature opportunities for cross-institutional exchange and professional development between doctoral students, alumni, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, and professional scientists from Berkeley, Caltech, Stanford, UCLA, California’s federally funded national laboratories. 



In order to register for the retreat, you will need to join our Trellis group. If you are already a Trellis user, search and request membership in the group: “California Alliance Retreat – 2018”. If you are not currently a Trellis member, reach out to with your name, campus affiliation, title, and email address to request membership.


Once you have joined Trellis here are the steps to register for the Retreat:

  • Step 1: Logon to your Trellis account at

  • Step 2: From the landing page, click on "My Groups" from the top menu

  • Step 3: Click on "California A lliance Retreat - 2018" and from either the main landing page or the Discussions tab, click on "Retreat Registration Form" link within the discussion post


As a part of the 2018 Retreat, the California Alliance is developing an online community of STEM graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and administrators that will serve as an extension of the Retreat by providing online resources and community engagement. Trellis is a digital platform developed through the AAAS which allows members of the scientific community to engage and collaborate. Your membership will not only give you access to California Alliance resources, but a wider global STEM community.
